Trinity Life Church was hosting a week of services featuring a healing evangelist. Pa had pinned the advertising flyer to the fridge with a magnet. No matter what turmoil she was in, Arianne knew she would have to go. There were so many possibilities. Physical healing might be one of them. On the other hand …

“The meetings will be from Monday to Thursday, just before Good Friday,” Pa said. “Do you want to go early in the week or wait until Easter?”

It was no use telling him she’d prefer not to go at all. “Let’s go on Thursday. Lucy and Matthew said they would come with me.”

“I’m believing God for good things, Ari.” Pa sat back in his easy chair and kicked the footrest out. His expression was satisfied and relaxed. Should she say something?

“Pa?”

“Yes, darlin’.” He lifted his mug of hot coffee for another sip.

“What happens if I go and nothing changes?” Arianne watched his forehead crease.

“We’ve just got to believe, Ari. God knows our needs. He’s powerful and mighty to heal.”

Arianne didn’t say anything. Those were words in a song she’d sung on many occasions. She believed it, didn’t she? If she were honest, she knew doubt was nipping at the edges of her mind. She should shut those thoughts down and just trust God.

Easier said than done.

“Don’t stress, darlin’.” Pa seemed to read her inner thoughts. “Let’s just go and see what happens. It’s better to pray and believe and handle disappointment if it doesn’t turn out the way we hope than not to pray.”

That was a trite statement. It sounded good if she were talking about some other random person, but this was her who was hoping. The disappointment would be hers to handle when it happened.

Arianne excused herself and rolled into her bedroom on the ground floor. Without stopping to think about it, she pulled out her phone to call Lucy.

“Hi, Ari. What’s up?” Matthew answered, sounding cheerful.

“Oh, hi. I thought I’d pressed Lucy’s number.”

“You did, but she’s in the shower. She left her phone on the kitchen counter. When I saw it was you, I thought I’d answer. Is that okay?”

Was it okay? Did she want to talk to Matthew?

“If not, no worries. I can pass a message on to Lucy that you called.”

“Have you got a few minutes to talk?” Arianne asked.

“Sure.”

“Do you have the rest of the family around, or are you somewhere quiet?”

“I’m heading to the back porch as we speak. You sound worried.”

“I am, a bit.”

“What’s worrying you?”

“I told Pa I’d go to the healing meeting on the Thursday before Easter.”

“Oh, right. We’re going to come with you, yeah?”

“What if nothing changes? What if God says no?”

Matthew went silent for a moment.

“I sometimes wonder if it would be better if I just accepted my condition and learned to live with it. This seems to be what all the naysayers refer to as false hope.” Arianne felt as if she were holding her breath. Did she sound like a complete heathen?

“I’m not sure what to say, Ari.
